A carpet can truly make or break a room in terms of looks. For that reason, it is important to keep carpets perfectly clean. However, there are different approaches you can take to accomplish this mission. This article will go over one of the most common methods of cleaning carpets: Bonnet cleaning.

What is Carpet Bonnet Cleaning?

Bonnet cleaning is a traditional method of carpet cleaning. It used very little water as most of its cleansing action comes as the result of a special cleaning agent. Once it has been applied to the carpet, this method requires a certain amount of scrubbing it in, traditionally using circular motions, for the product to cause dirt particles to become loose enough to be absorbed with ease.

What is a Bonnet?

Simply put, a bonnet is a machine that works much like a floor buffer by producing circular motions that aim at loosening and removing dirt particles from the carpet or rug. A carpet cleaning bonnet also features an absorbent spin pad that attracts and absorbs a majority of the dirt particles, transferring them to a specially-designed pouch that can be later emptied and cleaned.

How is Carpet Bonnet Cleaning Performed?

Before using a bonnet to clean a carpet, experts usually vacuum the carpet with extreme thoroughness, sometimes going as far as to manually remove pieces of dirt. Once the carpet has been thoroughly vacuumed, it’s time to apply the cleaning solution or agent. Often, this cleaning agent will be diluted with a small amount of water.

Immediately after applying the solution, the bonnet machine can be used. It’s important to control the state of the bonnet, flipping or replacing it once it has become soiled. After drying, it’s not unlikely that there will be a certain amount of dry residue left from the cleaning solution. This residue can be quickly vacuumed, resulting in a pristine carpet.

How is Carpet Bonnet Cleaning Different from Standard Commercial Cleaning?

The main difference between carpet bonnet cleaning and standard commercial carpet cleaning is the use of water. While bonnet cleaning uses very little water, standard commercial cleaning uses hot water as its main cleaning agent. Also referred to as carpet extraction cleaning, standard commercial cleaning uses hot water in combination with a vacuuming action. As the hot water is sprayed onto the carpet, dislodged dirt and debris are removed using a vacuum cleaner.

Another important difference between both methods has to do with the use of chemical agents. Unlike what happens with bonnet cleaning, during extraction cleaning, very little or no detergent is added to the hot water. Instead, this method relies on the temperature of the water as its main dirt-removing agent. For that reason, this method of cleaning is often used with carpets that could be damaged by the chemicals of a cleaning agent.
